John F. Martin, PhD, Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® (CAP®)
I help visionaries reshape the world for good. I resource clients in areas of community engaged service learning / civic engagement for higher education; empathy and care for healthcare / the helping professions; and maximizing leadership for nonprofits. My work with these groups is backed by a proven track record of leadership in strategic planning, fundraising, and charitable gift planning; healthcare foundation administration; and a research agenda of service learning in higher education, exploring empathy & care in healthcare. I proudly maintain certification from The American College of Financial Services as a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy®.
Maximizing the effort to reshape the world for good, I also teach university courses in Financial Management in Healthcare, Ethics in Healthcare, Nonprofit Management & Leadership, Nonprofit Marketing, Business Communications, and Fundraising. I am a tenacious advocate for nonprofit organization best practices and ethics, charitable gift planning, academic quality, and student philanthropy in the form of service learning and civic engagement.
My research, informed by ethics of care, examines empathy and care in healthcare settings. I am an occasional presenter at medical, healthcare, and education conferences, where I share my findings on service learning's role in producing empathy and care outcomes in nursing students. I am passionate about the potential of service learning in forming students to lead lives of moral and civic responsibility.
